Pinpoint Test S: The 4X4 And 4X4 Low Indicator Is Never/Always On

- S1 DETERMINE THE CONDITION
- Key in ON position.
- Observe the 4x4 indicators.
- Is a 4x4 indicator always on?
- Yes : GO to S2.
- No : GO to S4.
- S2 CHECK THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: 4WD Control Module C281b.
- Observe the 4x4 indicator.
- Key in ON position.
- Did the 4x4 indicator turn off?
- Yes : GO to S9.
- No : GO to S3.
- S3 CHECK CIRCUITS 784 (LB/BK) AND 783 (GY) FOR A SHORT
TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 18, circuit 784 (LB/BK), harness side and ground; and between the instrument cluster C220a pin 17, circuit 783 (GY), harness side and ground.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- Yes : GO to S10.
- No : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- S4 CHECK THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) OPERATION
- Verify the operation of the 4WD function.
- Does the 4WD function correctly?
- Yes
: If 4x4 LOW indicator, GO to S7.
If 4x4 indicator, GO to S5.
- No : REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS to continue diagnosis of the 4WD system.
- S5 CHECK THE 4X4 HIGH INDICATOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: 4WD Module C281b.
- Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the 4WD module C281b pin 6, circuit 783 (GY), harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Does the 4x4 HIGH indicator illuminate?
NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.- Yes : GO to S9.
- No : GO to S6.
- S6 CHECK CIRCUIT 783 (GY) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the 4WD module C281b pin 6, circuit 783 (GY), harness side and the instrument cluster C220a pin 17, circuit 783 (GY), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to S10.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- S7 CHECK THE 4X4 LOW INDICATOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: 4WD Module C281b.
- Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the 4WD module C281b pin 9, circuit 784 (LB/BK), harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Does the 4X4 LOW indicator illuminate?
NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.- Yes : GO to S9.
- No : GO to S8.
- S8 CHECK CIRCUIT 784 (LB/BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the 4WD module C281b pin 9, circuit 784 (LB/BK), harness side and the instrument cluster C220a pin 18, circuit 784 (LB/BK), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to S10.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- S9 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4WD MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all 4WD module connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect all 4WD module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new 4WD module. REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the 4WD module self-test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- S10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for nor
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
