Pinpoint Test P: The Brake Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. P1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTCS FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Use the recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Is DTC C1226 present? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P10.
    2. No  : GO to P2
  2. P2 DETERMINE THE CONDITION 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Apply and release the parking brake while monitoring the SJB parking brake switch PID.
    • Do the PIDs agree? 
    1. Yes  : If always on, GO to  P14.

      If inoperative, GO to  P12.

    2. No  : If always on, GO to P3.

      If inoperative, GO to P7.

  3. P3 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Parking Brake Switch C2015.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the brake warning indicator.
    • Did the brake warning indicator turn off? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new parking brake switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to P4.
  4. P4 CHECK THE SJB 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the brake warning indicator.
    • Does the brake warning indicator turn off? 
    1. Yes  : GO to P5.
    2. No  : GO to  P6.
  5. P5 CHECK CIRCUIT 1309 (RD/YE) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280c pin 17, circuit 1309, (RD/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P17.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. P6 CHECK CIRCUIT 977 (VT/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 20, circuit 977 (VT/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P16.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. P7 CHECK CIRCUIT 570 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Parking Brake Switch C2015.
    • Measure the resistance between the parking brake switch C2015 pin 2, circuit 570 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to P8.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. P8 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE INPUT 
    • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the parking brake switch C2015 pin 1, circuit 1309 (RD/YE), harness side and the parking brake switch C2015 pin 2, circuit 57 (BK) harness side.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new parking brake switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : REMOVE the jumper wire, Go to P9.
  9. P9 CHECK CIRCUIT 1309 (RD/YE) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280c.
    • Measure the resistance between the parking brake switch C2015 pin 1, circuit 1309 (RD/YE), harness side and the SJB C2280c pin 17, circuit 1309, (RD/YE), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P17.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. P10 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the brake warning indicator.
    • Does the brake warning indicator turn on? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P18.
    2. No  : GO to P11.
  11. P11 CHECK CIRCUIT 22 (LB/BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 16, circuit 22 (LB/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P16.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  12. P12 CHECK THE SJB 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the SJB C2280c pin 18, circuit 977 (VT/WH) harness side and ground.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : REMOVE the jumper wire, GO to  P17.
    2. No  : REMOVE the jumper wire, GO to P13.
  13. P13 CHECK CIRCUIT 977 (VT/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 20, circuit 977 (VT/WH), harness side and the SJB C2280c pin 18, circuit 977, (VT/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  P16.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  14. P14 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.
    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the ABS module C135 pin 27, circuit 22 (LB/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the brake warning indicator.
    • Does the brake warning indicator continue to illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to P15.
    2. No  : GO to  P18.
  15. P15 CHECK CIRCUIT 22 (LB/BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 16, circuit 22 (LB/BK), harness side and the ABS module C135 pin 27, circuit 22, (LB/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to P16.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  16. P16 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the selftest.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test.
  17. P17 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • fPushed-out pins
    • Connect all SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  18. P18 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
