Pinpoint Test H: The Anti-Lock Brake System (Abs) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. H1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TEST USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster warning lamps active command. Trigger the all lamps active command ON and then OFF. Observe the ABS warning indicator.
    • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off? 
    1. Yes  : GO to H2.
    2. No  : GO to  H10.
  2. H2 RETRIEVE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER RECORDED DTCS FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Use the recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-test.
    • Is DTC C1221 present? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  H5.
    2. No  : If the ABS warning indicator is never on, GO to H3. If the ABS warning indicator is always on, GO to H6.
  3. H3 VERIFY THE ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
    • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  H11.
    2. No  : GO to H4.
  4. H4 CHECK CIRCUIT 603 (DG) FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Measure the voltage between the ABS module C135 pin 17, circuit 603 (DG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  H11.
    2. No  : GO to H5.
  5. H5 CHECK CIRCUIT 603 (DG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 18, circuit 603 (DG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  H10.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. H6 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the brake warning indicator.
    • Is the brake warning indicator illuminated? 
    1. Yes  : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for diagnosis of the communication network. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to H7.
  7. H7 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE ABS MODULE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a, C220b.
    • Connect: ABS Module C135.
    • Connect: Instrument Cluster C220a, C220b.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
    • Does the ABS warning indicator prove-out correctly? 
    1. Yes  : System is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
    2. No  : GO to H8.
  8. H8 CHECK THE ABS MODULE CIRCUIT 603 (DG) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the ABS module C135 pin 17, circuit 603 (DG), harness side and ground. Observe the ABS warning indicator.

    • Does the ABS warning indicator turn off? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  H11.
    2. No  : REMOVE the jumper wire, GO to H9.
  9. H9 CHECK CIRCUIT 603 (DG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 18, circuit 603 (DG), harness side and the ABS module C135 pin 17, circuit 603 (DG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to H10.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. H10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  11. H11 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all ABS module connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all ABS module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-THEFT . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
