Pinpoint Test G: The Charge System Warning Indicator Is Never On

- G1 CHECK THE CHARGE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR
- Key in ON position.
- Observe the charge system warning indicator.
- Key in START position.
- Does the charge system warning indicator illuminate when the ignition switch is in the ON position, and turn off when the ignition switch is in the RUN position?
- Yes : System is operating correctly at this time.
- No : GO to G2.
- G2 CHECK CIRCUIT 904 (LG/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Generator C102a.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- For 2.3L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 20, circuit 904 (LG/RD), harness side and the generator C102a pin 1, circuit 904 (LG/RD), harness side.
- For 3.0L and 4.0L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 20, circuit 904 (LG/RD), harness side and the generator C102a pin 1, circuit 904 (LG/RD), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to G3.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- G3 CHECK CIRCUIT 904 (LG/RD) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a pin 20, circuit 904 (LG/RD), harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Is voltage present?
- Yes : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to G4.
- G4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Incorrectly installed bulb sockets
- Burnt-out bulbs
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
