Pinpoint Test F: The Tachometer Is Inoperative

  1. F1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster gauges active command. Trigger, monitor, and sweep the gauges. Observe the tachometer gauge.
    • Does the tachometer gauge sweep correctly? 
    1. Yes  : GO to F2.
    2. No  : GO to  F4.
  2. F2 CHECK CLEAN TACH OUT (CTO) SIGNAL TO TACHOMETER 
    • Key in START position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Key in START position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a pin 6, circuit 11 (TN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage between 5 and 8 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  F5.
    2. No  : GO to F3.
  3. F3 CHECK CIRCUIT 11 (TN/YE) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 6, circuit 11 (TN/YE), harness side and the PCM C175 pin 48, circuit 11 (TN/YE), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220a pin 6, circuit 11 (TN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the PCM; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  F6.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. F4 CHECK CIRCUIT 11 (TN/YE) FOR A SHORT TO POWER 
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a pin 6, circuit 11 (TN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to  F6.
  5. F5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. F6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the PCM connector.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the PCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
