Pinpoint Test E: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

Test Step 

  1. E1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster gauges active command. Trigger, monitor, and sweep the gauges. Observe the speedometer gauge.
    • Does the speedometer gauge sweep correctly? 

    Result/Action to Take 

    1. Yes  : GO to E2.
    2. No  : GO to  E3.
  2. E2 CHECK CIRCUIT 679 (GY/BK) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
    • Disconnect: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 5, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side and the PCM C175 pin 68, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220a pin 5, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the PCM; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  E4.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. E3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. E4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the PCM connector.
    • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the PCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
