Removal and Installation

Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L .
Remove the coolant outlet pipe for the 2.3L, front. Refer to COOLANT OUTLET PIPE - 2.3L, FRONT .
Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R44E & 5R55E (automatic) or MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION (manual).

CAUTION: Use a block of wood to protect the oil pan.

Support the motor with an appropriate jack stand.
Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.

Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.

Remove the bolts, the rear coolant outlet pipe and the gasket.

NOTE: Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install a new gasket.

NOTE: Inspect the two front coolant outlet pipe O-rings. Install new O-rings if necessary.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
