Removal and Installation

- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L .
- Remove the coolant outlet pipe for the 2.3L, front. Refer to COOLANT OUTLET PIPE - 2.3L, FRONT .
- Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R44E & 5R55E (automatic) or MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION (manual).
- Support the motor with an appropriate jack stand.
- Disconnect the coolant bypass hose.
- Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the bolts, the rear coolant outlet pipe and the gasket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
CAUTION:
Use a block of wood to protect the oil pan.
NOTE:
Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install a new gasket.
NOTE:
Inspect the two front coolant outlet pipe O-rings. Install new O-rings if necessary.
