Pinpoint Test B: The Engine Overheats

  1. B1 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL 
    NOTE: If the engine is hot, allow the engine to cool before proceeding.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap or pressure relief cap (2.3L) under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury and/or damage to the cooling system or engine. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the cooling system, use extreme care when removing the radiator cap or pressure relief cap (2.3L) from a hot radiator. Wait until the engine has cooled, then wrap a thick cloth around the radiator cap or pressure relief cap (2.3L) and turn it slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are certain all the pressure has been released, press down on the radiator cap or pressure relief cap (2.3L) (with a cloth), turn and remove.
    • Check the engine coolant level at the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
    • Is the engine coolant OK? 
    1. Yes  : GO to B2.
    2. No  : REFILL the engine coolant at the radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Go To PINPOINT TEST A: LOSS OF COOLANT .
  2. B2 CHECK THE COOLANT CONDITION 
    • Check the coolant for dirt, rust or contamination.
    • Is the coolant condition OK? 
    1. Yes  : GO to B3.
    2. No  : FLUSH the engine cooling system. REFER to ENGINE AND RADIATOR FLUSHING . TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. B3 CHECK FOR AN AIRFLOW OBSTRUCTION 
    • Inspect the A/C condenser core and radiator for obstructions such as leaves or dirt.
    • Is there an obstruction? 
    1. Yes  : REMOVE the obstruction. CLEAN the A/C condenser core and radiator. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to B4.
  4. B4 CHECK THE WATER THERMOSTAT OPERATION 
    • Key in START position.
    • Start the engine and allow the engine to run for 10 minutes.
    • Feel the underside of the upper radiator hose.
    • Is the upper radiator hose cold? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new water thermostat. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to B5.
  5. B5 CHECK THE COOLING FAN OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Carry out the cooling fan component tests. Refer to the FAN CLUTCH TEST .
    • Is the cooling fan operation OK? 
    1. Yes  : REFER to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION for diagnosis and testing of the engine.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new fan component determined to be faulty. REFER to FAN CLUTCH TEST . TEST the system for normal operation.
