Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER RH .
  2. Remove the rocker arms.

  3. NOTE: Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. If the air pressure fails to hold the valve(s) closed while performing the following steps, valve or valve seat damage is indicated and the cylinder head must be removed.

  4. Using a valve spring compressor, remove the valve spring retainer keys.
  5. Remove the valve spring retainer.

  6. Remove the valve spring. Refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION for component tests for the valve spring.

  7. Remove the valve stem seal.

  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
