Removal and Installation

    All Vehicles 

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  3. Remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.
    1. Remove the screws and position the hood release handle aside.
    2. Remove the screws from the lower steering column opening finish panel.
    3. Pull out the release the retaining clips and remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.

  4. Remove the five bolts and the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement.

  5. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  7. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Release the pin-type retainer and disconnect the electrical connector.
    3. Release the pin -type retainer and disconnect the electrical connector.

  8. Vehicles With Automatic Transmission 

  9. Remove the transmission range indicator (PRND21) from the steering column.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the indicator cable.

  10. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column.
    1. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever.
    2. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.

  11. All Vehicles 

  12. Disconnect the brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector.

  13. NOTE: Secure the steering column in place so it will not turn after the pinch bolt is removed.
  14. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.
    • Discard the bolt.

  15. Remove the steering column lower nuts.

  16. Remove the nuts and the steering column.

  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Use a new pinch bolt.
