Pinpoint Test C: DTCS C1145, C1155, And C1230 - Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Failure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Test Step

  1. C1 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RESISTANCE AT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Anti-Lock Brake Control Module C135.
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module C135 pins harness side for the suspect wheel speed sensor and between each pin and ground as follows:
      RESISTANCE

Wheel Speed Sensor ABS module C135
      Positive Probe Negative Probe
      LF 5 6
      RF 3 4
      Rear 21 14

    • Is the resistance between 800 and 1400 ohms (front 4x2), 800 and 2500 ohms (rear), or 380 and 480 ohms (front 4x4)? Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms between the ABS module C135 and ground?

    Result / Action to Take

    1. Yes  : GO to C4.
    2. No  : GO to C2.
  2. C2 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RESISTANCE
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
    • Measure the resistance between suspect wheel speed sensor terminals and between each terminal and ground.

    • Is the resistance between 800 and 1400 ohms (front 4x2), 800 and 2500 ohms (rear), or 380 and 480 ohms (front 4x4)?
    1. Yes  : GO to C3.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4x4), REFER to SENSOR - FRONT 4X4 . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.

For the front wheel speed sensor (4x2), REFER to SENSOR - FRONT 4X2 . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.

For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to SENSOR - REAR . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.

  3. C3 CHECK SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR OPEN
    • Measure the resistance between the suspect wheel speed sensor, harness side, and the ABS module C135 as follows:
      RESISTANCE

Wheel Speed Sensor Wheel Speed Sensor Pin ABS Module C135
      LF 1
      2
      5

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. Yes  : GO to C4.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit, CLEAR the DTCs and REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
  4. C4 CHECK THE SUSPECT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER
    • Disconnect: Anti-Lock Brake Control Module.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the ABS module C135 pins and ground as follows:
      VOLTAGE

Wheel Speed Sensor ABS Module C135
      LF 5
      6
      RF 3

    • Is voltage present?
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs and REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
    2. No  : GO to C5.
  5. C5 CHECK WHEEL END ROUTING FOR DAMAGE
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor cable at the affected wheel end for chafing or other wiring damage.
    • Is damage found?
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor.

    2. No  : GO to C6.
  6. C6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
    • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
