Pinpoint Test C: One Low Beam Headlamp Is Inoperative

  1. C1 DETERMINE IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH HID LIGHTING 
    • Check the vehicle for HID headlamps.
    • Is the vehicle equipped with HID headlamps? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  C7.
    2. No  : GO to C2.
  2. C2 RETRIEVE THE FEM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) 
    NOTE: Make sure the headlamp switch is in the OFF position.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Carry out the FEM on-demand self-test.
    • Are any DTCs present? 
    1. Yes  : If DTC B1794, GO to  C4.

      All others, REFER to the FEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) index for correct diagnostics.

    2. No  : GO to C3.
  3. C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-LE16 (BK/RD) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 31S-LE23 (BK/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201a.
    • Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the FEM C201a-8, circuit 31S-LE16 (BK/RD) (LH headlamp), harness side and ground; or between the FEM C201a-7, circuit 31S-LE23 (BK/WH) (RH headlamp), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to  C13.
  4. C4 CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LE16 (OG/GN) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 29S-LE23 (OG/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN (HALOGEN HEADLAMP) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021 - 1, circuit 29S-LE16 (OG/GN), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041 - 1, circuit 29S-LE23 (OG/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to C5.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. C5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-LE16 (BK/RD) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 31S-LE23 (BK/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201a.
    • Measure the resistance between the FEM C201a-8, circuit 31S-LE16 (BK/RD), harness side and the LH headlamp C1021 -4, circuit 31S-LE16 (BK/RD), harness side; or between the FEM C201a-7, circuit 31S-LE23 (BK/WH), harness side and the RH headlamp C1041 -4, circuit 31S-LE23 (BK/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to C6.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. C6 CHECK THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY 
    • Connect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the FEM C201a-8, circuit 31S-LE16 (BK/RD) (LH headlamp), harness side and ground; or between the FEM C201a-7, circuit 31S-LE23 (BK/WH) (RH headlamp), harness side and ground.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the inoperative low beam now illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  C13.
    2. No  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new headlamp assembly. REFER to HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY . TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. C7 CHECK CIRCUIT 91S-LE16 (BN/YE) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 91S-LE23 (BN/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201b or C201f.
    • Disconnect: LH HID Relay C1379 or RH HID Relay C1380.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the FEM C201b-6, circuit 91S-LE16 (BN/YE) (LH headlamp), harness side and ground; or between the FEM C201f-20, circuit 91S-LE23 (BN/WH) (RH headlamp), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to C8.
  8. C8 CHECK CIRCUIT 91S-LE16 (BN/YE) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 91S-LE23 (BN/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the FEM C201b-6, circuit 91S-LE16 (BN/YE), harness side and the LH HID relay C1379-2, circuit 91S-LE16 (BN/YE), harness side; or between the FEM C201f-20, circuit 91S-LE23 (BN/WH), harness side and the RH HID relay C1380-2, circuit 91S-LE23 (BN/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to C9.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. C9 CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LE16 (OG/GN) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 29S-LE23 (OG/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN (HID HEADLAMP) 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the LH HID relay C1379-1, circuit 29S-LE16 (OG/GN), harness side and ground; or between the RH HID relay C1380-1, circuit 29S-LE23 (OG/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : GO to C10.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. C10 CHECK THE HID RELAY 
    • Carry out the HID relay component test.

      Refer to COMPONENT TESTING .

    • Is the HID relay OK? 
    1. Yes  : GO to C11.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new HID relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. C11 CHECK CIRCUIT 30-LE31 (RD/YE) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 30-LE30 (RD/BU) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN (HID HEADLAMP) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the voltage between the LH HID relay C1379-3, circuit 30-LE31 (RD/YE), harness side and ground; or between the RH HID relay C1380-3, circuit 30-LE30 (RD/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to C12.
  12. C12 CHECK THE FEM 
    • Connect: LH HID Relay C1379 or RH HID Relay C1380.
    • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the FEM C201b-6, circuit 91S-LE16 (BN/YE) (LH headlamp), harness side and ground; or between the FEM C201f-20, circuit 91S-LE23 (BN/WH) (RH headlamp), harness side and ground.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the inoperative low beam now illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to C13.
    2. No  : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to  C14.
  13. C13 CHECK FOR FEM OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all FEM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all FEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new FEM. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  14. C14 CHECK CIRCUIT 30S-LE16 (RD/BK) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 30S-LE23 (RD/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: FEM C201 a.
    • Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021 - 1, circuit 30S-LE1 6 (RD/BK), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041-1, circuit 30S-LE23 (RD/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes  : TURN the headlamp switch OFF. GO to C15.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  15. C15 CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LE16 (BK/RD) (LH LOW BEAM) OR CIRCUIT 31-LE23 (BK/WH) (RH LOW BEAM) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the LH headlamp C1021 -4, circuit 31-LE16 (BK/RD), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041 -4, circuit 31-LE23 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new ballast. REFER to HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
