Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 3.0L (4V): Material

CAUTION: If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.
  • If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM FLUSHING .
  • If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed. For additional information, refer to REFRIGERANT SYSTEM FILTERING AFTER A/C COMPONENT REPLACEMENT .
  • Install a new thermostatic expansion valve, as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
  • Install a new receiver drier (19950) as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
NOTE: If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch disc and hub (19D786), A/C compressor pulley (19D784) and A/C clutch field coil (19D798) must be inspected and transferred from the old unit to the new unit if suitable for reuse.
NOTE: Installation of a new receiver drier is not required when repairing the air conditioning system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver drier.
NOTE: New O-ring seals, lubricated in clean PAG oil, must be installed before reconnecting any A/C fitting that has been disconnected.
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING .
  2. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
  3. Illustration 1 of 2. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. See Fig 1.

  5. NOTE: If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found. If excessive grooving is found, a new A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley must be installed together. Otherwise, each component can be installed individually where needed.
  6. Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage.
    • Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat.
    • Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth.
    • Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  8. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. For additional information, refer to REFRIGERANT OIL ADDING .
  9. If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING .

Item 6: A/C Clutch Nut Removal Note 

  1. Remove the A/C clutch nut.
    1. Using the special tool, hold the clutch plate.
    2. Remove the nut.

Item 10: A/C Clutch Pulley Removal Note 

    CAUTION: Do not use air tools. Damage to the A/C clutch pulley or A/C compressor may result.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the A/C clutch pulley.

Item 12: A/C Clutch Field Coil Removal Note 

    NOTE: Apply a pea-sized drop of silicone sealant to the thermal limiter socket before installing the thermal limiter into the A/C compressor. Failure to use the approved sealant listed in the materials table may affect the function of the switch.

  1. Remove the thermal limiter.
    1. Remove the bolt and the hold-down bracket.
    2. Remove the thermal limiter.
