Pinpoint Test E: Excessive Fuel Odor

  1. E1 TEST THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) RUNNING LOSS SYSTEM MONITOR 
  2. E2 EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST 
  3. E3 TEST FOR FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR OPERATION 
  4. E4 TEST FOR BLOCKAGE IN VENTING PORTION OF THE EVAP SYSTEM 
  5. E5 TEST FOR BLOCKAGE THROUGH EVAPORATIVE EMISSION TEST PORT 
    • Connect the Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester to the evaporative emission test port.
    • Close the canister vent solenoid. Refer to CANISTER VENT SOLENOID CLOSING PROCEDURE .
    • Pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Is the FTP (FTP V) PID reading 3.11 kPa to 3.86 kPa (12.5 to 15.5 inches H2O) (4.22 to 4.90 volts)? 
      1. Yes  : Evaporative emission system operating correctly. GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
      2. No  : GO to E6.
  6. E6 TEST FOR BLOCKAGE IN FUEL VAPOR CONTROL VALVE TUBE ASSEMBLY 
    • Disconnect the fuel vapor control valve tube assembly from the under vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.

    • Pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
      1. Yes  : Fuel vapor control valve tube or fuel tank vapor control valve is blocked. REMOVE the fuel tank assembly. REFER to FUEL TANK AND FILLER PIPE . REMOVE the vapor control tube from the tank and INSPECT it for any blockage or kinks. If the fuel vapor control tube is faulty, INSTALL a new one. If the fuel vapor control tube is not restricted, INSTALL a new fuel tank assembly. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E7.
  7. E7 TEST FOR BLOCKAGE IN UNDER-VEHICLE FUEL SUPPLY AND VAPOR TUBE ASSEMBLY 
    • Remove the front left wheel and wheel house liner.
    • Disconnect the under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube from the engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube.

    • Pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. REFER to FUEL LINES AND FUEL FILTER . RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E8.
  8. E8 TEST FOR BLOCKAGE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUEL SUPPLY AND VAPOR TUBE ASSEMBLY 
    • Disconnect the engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly from the evaporative emission canister purge valve.

    • Pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. RECONNECT all components. GO to E7. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : INSTALL a new evaporative emission canister purge valve. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CANISTER AND PURGE VALVE . RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
  9. E9 TEST TO DETERMINE GENERAL LOCATION OF LEAK 
    • Connect the Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester to the fuel filler pipe.
    • Disconnect the fuel vapor control valve tube from the under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly and plug both tubes.

    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test procedure. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : Leak is in the front portion of the EVAP system. GO to E10.
      2. No  : Leak is in the rear portion of the EVAP system. GO to  E14.
  10. E10 TEST TO CONFIRM LEAK IS IN THE FRONT PORTION OF THE EVAP SYSTEM 
    • Connect the Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester to the EVAP system test port.
    • Plug the under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.
    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the EVAP system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL new O-ring seals between the evaporative emission fuel vapor control valve tube assembly and the under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E11.
  11. E11 TEST FOR LEAK IN UNDER-VEHICLE FUEL SUPPLY AND VAPOR TUBE ASSEMBLY 
    • Remove the front left wheel and wheel house liner.
    • Disconnect the under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly from the engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.

    • Plug the engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly.
    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test procedure. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new under-vehicle fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E12.
  12. E12 TEST FOR LEAK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUEL SUPPLY AND VAPOR TUBE ASSEMBLY 
    • Disconnect the engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly from the evaporative emission canister purge valve.

    • Plug the evaporative emission canister purge valve.
    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the EVAP system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new engine compartment fuel supply and vapor tube assembly. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E13.
  13. E13 TEST FOR LEAK IN EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE 
  14. E14 TEST TO DETERMINE IF LEAK IS IN EVAP CANISTER OR FUEL TANK PORTION OF THE SYSTEM 
    • Disconnect the fuel vapor control valve tube from EVAP canister purge outlet tube.

    • Connect the evaporative emission system leak tester to the fuel filler pipe.
    • Plug the open end of the fuel vapor control valve tube.
    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the EVAP system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : RECONNECT all components. GO to E15.
      2. No  : GO to  E20.
  15. E15 TEST FOR LEAK IN CANISTER VENT SOLENOID 
    • Reconnect the fuel vapor control valve tube to the EVAP canister purge outlet tube.

    • Lower the differential to access the canister vent solenoid. Refer to DRIVELINE SYSTEM .
    • Disconnect the canister vent solenoid from the canister vent solenoid hose and plug the hose.

    • Carry out the Evaporative Emission System Leak Test. Refer to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
    • Does the EVAP system pass the leak test? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new canister vent solenoid. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CANISTER VENT SOLENOID . RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E16.
  16. E16 TEST THE CANISTER VENT SOLENOID HOSE FOR LEAK 
    • Reinstall the differential. Refer to DRIVELINE SYSTEM .
    • Lower the rear subframe out of the way.
    • Remove the EVAP canister and bracket assembly.
    • Connect the Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester to the EVAP canister purge outlet tube.
    • Disconnect the canister vent solenoid hose from the 1.0L EVAP canister and plug the EVAP canister.

    • Pressurize the system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure hold? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new canister vent solenoid hose. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. Yes  : GO to E17.
  17. E17 TEST FOR LEAK IN 1.0L EVAP CANISTER 
    • Disconnect the fuel vapor storage canister inlet tube from the 1.0L EVAP canister and plug the inlet tube.

    • Pressurize the system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure hold? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new 1.0L EVAP canister. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E18.
  18. E18 TEST FOR LEAK IN FUEL VAPOR STORAGE CANISTER INLET TUBE 
    • Disconnect the fuel vapor storage canister inlet tube from the 2.0L EVAP canister and plug the EVAP canister.

    • Pressurize the system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure hold? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new fuel vapor storage canister inlet tube. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : GO to E19.
  19. E19 TEST FOR LEAK IN 2.0L EVAP CANISTER 
    • Disconnect the EVAP canister purge outlet tube from the 2.0L EVAP canister and plug the outlet tube.

    • Pressurize the system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O).
    • Does the pressure hold? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new 2.0L EVAP canister. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
      2. No  : INSTALL a new EVAP canister purge outlet tube. RECONNECT all components. CARRY OUT the evaporative emission system leak test. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, CARRY OUT the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. REFER to EVAPORATIVE EMISSION REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE .
  20. E20 TEST FOR LEAK IN FUEL VAPOR CONTROL VALVE TUBE AND FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY 
  21. E21 TEST FOR LEAK IN FUEL FILLER PIPE HOSE
