Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the timing drive components. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS  in this section.
  2. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. See Fig 1.

  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Items 1-6: Camshaft Removal Note 

  1. Remove the special tool.

  2. CAUTION: Record the camshaft bearing cap locations. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.
    CAUTION: Do not use any means of marking the shims other than a permanent-type marker. Any scratches or paint on the shims can result in incorrect lash adjustments and severe engine damage.
    CAUTION: Record the shim and bucket tappet location. The shim and bucket tappet are positional and if installed in the incorrect location, engine damage can occur.

  3. Remove the RH camshaft bearing caps.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Remove the RH camshaft bearing caps.
  4. Remove the RH camshafts.

  5. CAUTION: Record the camshaft bearing cap locations. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.

  6. Remove the LH camshaft bearing caps.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Remove the LH camshaft bearing caps.
  7. Remove the LH camshafts.

Items 1-7: Camshaft Installation Note 

    NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals, the camshaft caps and the camshaft lobes prior to installing the camshafts.

  1. Position the LH camshafts on the camshaft journals.
  2. CAUTION: Install the camshaft bearing caps. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.

  3. Install the LH camshaft bearing caps.
    • Position the bearing caps.
    • Install the bearing cap bolts. Tighten the bolts in three stages in the sequence shown. See Fig 8.
      • Stage 1: Hand-tighten.
      • Stage 2: Tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
      • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  4. NOTE: Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals, the camshaft caps and the camshaft lobes prior to installing the camshafts.

  5. Install the RH camshafts.
  6. CAUTION: Install the camshaft bearing caps. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.

  7. Install the RH camshaft bearing caps.
    • Position the bearing caps.
    • Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in three stages in the sequence shown. See Fig 10.
      • Stage 1: Hand-tighten.
      • Stage 2: Tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
      • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  8. CAUTION: If any components are installed new, the engine must be reshimmed or engine damage can occur.

  9. Using a feeler gauge, confirm that the tappet and shim clearances are within specification. For additional information, refer to VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK  in this section.
  10. If tappet and shim clearances are not within specification, adjust the clearance. For additional information, refer to VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT  in this section.
  11. Install the timing drive components. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS  in this section.
