Removal and Installation

- Remove the timing drive components. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS in this section.
- Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. See Fig 1.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Items 1-6: Camshaft Removal Note
- Remove the special tool.
- Remove the RH camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the RH camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the RH camshafts.
- Remove the LH camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the LH camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the LH camshafts.
CAUTION:
Record the camshaft bearing cap locations. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.
CAUTION:
Do not use any means of marking the shims other than a permanent-type marker. Any scratches or paint on the shims can result in incorrect lash adjustments and severe engine damage.
CAUTION:
Record the shim and bucket tappet location. The shim and bucket tappet are positional and if installed in the incorrect location, engine damage can occur.
CAUTION:
Record the camshaft bearing cap locations. The camshaft bearing caps are positional and must be installed in their original locations and orientation or engine damage can occur.
CAUTION:

Items 1-7: Camshaft Installation Note
- Position the LH camshafts on the camshaft journals.
- Install the LH camshaft bearing caps.
- Position the bearing caps.
- Install the bearing cap bolts. Tighten the bolts in three stages in the sequence shown. See Fig 8.
- Stage 1: Hand-tighten.
- Stage 2: Tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
- Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
- Install the RH camshafts.
- Install the RH camshaft bearing caps.
- Position the bearing caps.
- Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in three stages in the sequence shown. See Fig 10.
- Stage 1: Hand-tighten.
- Stage 2: Tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
- Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
- Using a feeler gauge, confirm that the tappet and shim clearances are within specification. For additional information, refer to VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK in this section.
- If tappet and shim clearances are not within specification, adjust the clearance. For additional information, refer to VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT in this section.
- Install the timing drive components. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS in this section.
NOTE:
Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals, the camshaft caps and the camshaft lobes prior to installing the camshafts.
