Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.

  1. F1 - CHECK FOR DTCs

  2. F2 - CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED PIDs

    • Use the diagnostic tool to monitor the wheel speed PIDs while driving the vehicle at a constant speed.
    • Are the four wheel speed PID values similar? 
      1. Yes  : CLEAR the DTC. DRIVE the vehicle. RETRIEVE DTCs. If DTC C1233, C1234, C1235 or C1236 is present, INSTALL a new anti-lock brake control module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE  in this section. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : GO to F3.
  3. F3 - CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FOR DAMAGE AND/OR LOOSENESS

    • Key in OFF position.
    • Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to IDENTIFICATION CODES .
    • CAUTION: Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with a good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire can lead to unnecessary installation of a new component.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor mounting for looseness. If the wheel speed sensor is suspected, inspect the sensor for corrosion or on the front anti-lock brake mounting flange. Clean as necessary.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor OK? 
      1. Yes  : GO to F4.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor, REFER to FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test. For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. F4 - CHECK FOR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING DAMAGE

    • Remove the wheel speed sensor.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor ring for damaged or missing teeth. Rotate the wheel to verify that no teeth are missing.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor ring OK? 
      1. Yes  : GO to F5.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor ring. For the front wheel speed sensor ring, REFER to FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test. For the rear wheel speed sensor ring, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. F5 - CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL MODULE OUTPUT

    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the ABS module C135 pins and the suspect wheel speed sensor connector pins as follows:

    • Are the voltages greater than 9 volts? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor, REFER to FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test. For the rear wheel speed sensor, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR RING  in this section. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new anti-lock brake control module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE  in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.
