Disc Brake Calipers & Pads: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Windstar and 2002 Ford Windstar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: To prevent master cylinder overflow when caliper piston is depressed, remove and discard some brake fluid from master cylinder.
NOTE: It is not required to install new brake pads if friction material properties are within guidelines. It is also not required to install new brake pads when the brake discs are machined.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Inspect the pads for wear and contamination.
  2. Remove two front disc brake caliper bolts. See Figure and Figure . Lift the disc brake caliper off the front disc brake caliper anchor plate.
  3. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the hydraulic line if caliper is not to be serviced.
  4. Disconnect the front brake hose. Remove the front brake hose bolt and discard the copper washers. Remove the brake caliper.
  5. Measure the front brake disc thickness. Install a new front brake disc if not within specification. See DISC & DRUM BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Inspect the disc brake caliper. See Fig 1 . If leaks or damaged boots are found, disassembly is required. See DISC BRAKE CALIPER  under OVERHAUL.
  7. Remove the pads and verify thickness. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate stainless steel slippers and discard.
  8. Inspect the front disc brake anchor plate assembly.
    • Check the guide pin boots for damage.
    • Check the guide pins for binding and damage.
    • Replace worn or damaged pins. Lube pins with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A), or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A.
