Red Brake Warning Light Does Not Illuminate With Abs Warning Light On (1998 Models)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Mercury Cougar, 1999 Ford Contour, 1998 Mercury Mystique, and 1998 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on. Apply parking brake. If Red BRAKE warning light illuminates, release parking brake and go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light does not illuminate, diagnose BRAKE waring light circuit.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS diode connector located behind left side of instrument panel. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ABS diode terminals. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms in one direction and greater than 10,000 ohms in the other direction, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ABS diode. Recheck system operation.
  3. Turn ignition on. Apply parking brake. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ABS diode Black/Yellow wire terminal and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair Black/Red wire between ABS diode and ABS control module. Recheck system operation. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and ABS diode. Recheck system operation.
