WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Mercury Cougar, 1999 Ford Contour, 1998 Mercury Mystique, and 1998 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition on. Observe oil pressure warning light during bulb-check. If oil pressure warning light illuminates, go to next step. If oil pressure warning light does not illuminate, repair Violet/Yellow wire between central junction box and instrument cluster. Reconnect all components. Recheck system operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 24-pin ABS control module connector. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between ABS control module connector terminals No. 20 (Black/Red wire) and No. 1 (Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If ABS warning light illuminates, remove jumper wire. Reconnect ABS control module connector and go to step 5) . If ABS control module does not illuminate, remove jumper wire and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 10-pin instrument cluster connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ABS control module connector terminal No. 20 (Black/Red wire) and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Red wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Black/Red wire between instrument cluster and ABS control module. Reconnect all components. Recheck system operation.
- Check ABS warning light bulb. If bulb is faulty, replace bulb. Reconnect all components. Recheck system operation. If bulb is okay, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board. Reconnect all components. Recheck system operation.
- Turn ignition on and observe ABS warning light. If ABS warning light illuminates during bulb-check, fault was intermittent. Recheck system operation. If ABS warning light does not illuminate during bulb-check, replace Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Reconnect all components. Recheck system operation.
