WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Mercury Cougar, 1999 Ford Contour, 1998 Mercury Mystique, and 1998 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 24-pin ABS control module connector. Check ABS control module connector for damage corrosion or moisture. If damage corrosion or moisture is found, go to next step. If connector is okay, replace damaged components, pins, connector housing or Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). If HCU is replaced, bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ABS control module connector terminal No. 19 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Also, measure resistance between ABS control module connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance measurement is greater than 5 ohms, repair suspect Black/Yellow wire between ABS control module and ground connection. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
- Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ABS control module connector terminal No. 3 (Red/Yellow wire) and ABS control module connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, reconnect ABS control module connector and go to step 5) . If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Using voltmeter, measure voltage between battery junction box Red/Yellow wire terminal socket (fuse No. 3) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Also, measure resistance between battery junction box Orange/Yellow wire terminal socket (fuse No. 7) and ground. If both voltage measurements are less than 10 volts, go to next step. If either voltage measurement is greater than 10 volts, repair Red/Yellow wire or Orange/Yellow wire between battery junction block and ABS control module. Reconnect all components. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
- Start engine and observe ABS warning light. If ABS warning light illuminates after 5-10 seconds, go to next step. If ABS warning light does not illuminate after 5-10 seconds, fault was repaired in previous step. System is okay. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
- Check for moisture or corrosion trapped within Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Reconnect ABS control module connector. Start engine and observe ABS warning light. If ABS warning light illuminates after 5-10 seconds, replace Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM . Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation. If ABS warning light does not illuminate after 5-10 seconds, fault was repaired in previous step. System is okay. Using NGS tester, clear DTCs. Recheck system operation.
