DTC C1222: Wheel Speed Signal Mismatch (1999 Models)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Mercury Cougar, 1999 Ford Contour, 1998 Mercury Mystique, and 1998 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check for proper wheel and tire size, front to rear and side to side. Check for excessive wheel bearing endplay. Check toothed sensor indicator ring for bent sensor ring or missing teeth. Repair as necessary. If wheels, bearing endplay and toothed sensor indicator ring are okay, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off, and then on. Test drive vehicle faster than 15 MPH. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC C1222 is set, replace Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Repeat self-test. If any other DTC is set, go to appropriate DTC for diagnosis. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION  table. If no DTCs are set, ABS is operating normally.
