Differential Housing Cover: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
- Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant to the differential housing cover.
- Install the differential housing cover.
- Position the differential housing cover.
- Install the bolts.
- Fill the rear axle with approximately 2.4 liters (5.0 pints) of rear axle lubricant and install the fill plug.
- Lower the vehicle.
CAUTION:
The machined surfaces on the differential housing and the differential housing cover must be clean and free of oil before applying the silicone sealant. Cover the inside of the rear axle (4001) prior to cleaning the machined surface to prevent contamination.
CAUTION:
Install the differential housing cover within 15 minutes of applying the silicone, or it will be necessary to apply new sealant.
NOTE:
If possible, allow one hour before filling the axle with lubricant to allow the silicone sealant to cure.
CAUTION:
When filling a Traction-Lok® axle with new lubricant, first fill the axle with 118 ml (4 oz) of friction modifier.
NOTE:
Service refill capacities are determined by filling the rear axle to the level shown.
