Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Econoline. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
The transmission linkage/cable adjustment, fluid level and line pressure must be within specification before carrying out this test. Refer to CABLE ADJUSTMENT for shift linkage adjustment. for adjustments.
- Remove fluid level indicator from fluid filler tube.
- Place funnel in fluid filler tube.
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist and place suitable safety stands under the vehicle.
- Before carrying out the Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test, examine the cooler lines for installation of an in-line fluid filter. If equipped with an in-line fluid filter, remove and discard the in-line fluid filter prior to carrying out the TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER FLOW TEST and flushing the system.
- Remove the cooler return line (top fitting) from the fitting on the transmission case.
- Connect one end of a hose to the cooler return line and route other end of the hose up to a point where it can be inserted into the funnel at the fluid filler tube.
- Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Insert end of hose into the funnel.
- Start the engine and run it at idle with the transmission in NEUTRAL.
- When fluid flows from the hose in a steady stream, a liberal amount of fluid should be observed. "Liberal" is about 1 liter (1 quart) delivered in 15 seconds. If a liberal flow is observed, the test is complete.
- If the flow is not liberal, stop the engine. Disconnect the hose from the cooler return line and connect it to the converter outlet fitting (bottom fitting) on the transmission case.
- Repeat Step 7 and Step 8. If flow is now approximately 1 liter (1 quart) in 15 seconds, refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER - BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING . If the flow is still not approximately 1 liter (1 quart) in 15 seconds, repair or install pump and or converter.
- Install a new inline transmission fluid filter or filter kit and check for leaks.
NOTE:
If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter, install a fluid filter service kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) follow the instructions supplied in the kit. If the vehicle was equipped with a inline fluid filter, Install a new fluid filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA).
For transmission fluid cooler or tube replacement, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
