Transmission Fluid Cooler - BACKFLUSHING And Cleaning

    CAUTION: Make sure that the in-line fluid filter if equipped, is removed prior to carrying out the Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning procedure and that a new one has not been installed until the Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning is complete.

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with an in-line transmission fluid filter, remove and discard the filter.
  2. Using a suitable torque converter/fluid cooler cleaner, flush the fluid cooler and lines.
  3. NOTE: Rubber hoses must be attached to the ends of the fluid cooler tubes, to aid in connecting them to the cleaner.
  4. Connect the cleaner pressure and return lines appropriately.
    1. Connect the pressure line to fluid cooler inlet tube.
    2. Connect the return line to fluid cooler outlet tube.
    3. Place the outlet end of the return line in the solvent tank reservoir.
  5. NOTE: Cycling the solvent pump on and off will help dislodge contaminants in the cooler system.
  6. Switch the solvent pumps on. Allow the solvent to circulate a minimum of 5 minutes.
  7. Switch the solvent pump off.
  8. Disconnect the cleaner pressure line at the fluid cooler tube.
  9. Using compressed air, blow through the fluid cooler inlet tube until all solvent is removed.
  10. Remove the rubber hoses from fluid cooler tubes.
  11. NOTE: If the vehicle was not equipped with a fluid filter, install a fluid filter service kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) follow the instructions supplied in the kit. If the vehicle was equipped with a fluid filter install a new filter (XC3Z-7B155-BA).

  12. Install a new in-line transmission fluid filter kit or filter and check for leaks.
