Idle Air Control Solenoid

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 32 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mercury Sable, 2002 Mercury Mountaineer, 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Mercury Cougar, and 2002 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid may also be referred to as IAC valve.

Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid is a by-pass air type. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect IAC solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance between IAC solenoid terminals. Solenoid has an internal diode and resistance will be infinite if voltmeter is hooked up incorrectly. If resistance is not 6-13 ohms, replace solenoid. If resistance is 6-13 ohms, IAC solenoid is okay. For additional testing and specifications, see TEST KE: IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE under SYSTEM TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article.
