Oil Pan: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the intake manifold spacer. For additional information, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD - SPACER ASSEMBLY .
  3. Remove the radiator upper hose.
    4. CAUTION: The clutch assembly nut has a right-hand thread and must be rotated counterclockwise to remove it.
    NOTE: Two people are needed to loosen the fan clutch pulley. From under the vehicle, have one person hold the fan pulley. The holding tool must be located at the 7 o'clock position. From the engine compartment, the second person can now loosen the fan clutch. The fan clutch nut wrench has to be located at the 12 o'clock position.

  4. Using the appropriate Fan Clutch Hub Nut Wrench and Fan Pulley Holding Wrench, loosen the fan clutch.
  5. Carefully rotate the fan and fan clutch assembly counterclockwise until the assembly is free from the water pump. Place the fan and fan clutch into the shroud opening.
    6. CAUTION: Use extreme care when removing or installing the fan, fan clutch and shroud. Failure to do so will cause damage to the radiator.

  6. Remove the fan, fan clutch and shroud.
    1. Remove the mounting bolts.
    2. Remove the fan, fan clutch and shroud.
  7. Remove the bolt retaining the dipstick tube support bracket to the transmission converter housing.

  8. Raise the vehicle.
  9. Drain the engine oil.
  10. Loosen the nuts.

  11. Remove the nuts (left side shown, right side similar).

  12. Remove the nuts (right side shown, left side similar).

  13. Position a screw jack and a block of wood under the oil pan.

    14. NOTE: If the engine is not raised at least 330 mm (13 in), it will not be possible to remove the oil pan.

  14. Raise the engine until the distance between the crankshaft damper and the bottom of the crossmember is at least 330 mm (13 in).
  15. Support the engine by placing blocks of wood between the engine mount bracket and the exhaust manifolds. Remove the screw jack and wood block from the oil pan.

  16. Remove the bolt retaining the oil pan to the right side of the transmission converter housing.

  17. Remove the bolts retaining the oil pan to the left side of the transmission converter housing.

  18. Remove the remaining bolts and the oil pan. Remove and discard the oil pan seal.
