Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove the intake manifold (9424). For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. If removing the right head, remove the ignition coil assembly. For additional information, refer to IGNITION COILS .
  3. Remove the valve cover (6582).
  4. Remove the bolts.
  5. Remove the stud bolts.
  6. Remove the valve cover.

  7. Remove the exhaust manifold (9430). For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD LH  or EXHAUST MANIFOLD RH .
  8. If removing the LH cylinder head (6049) and if so equipped, remove the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING .
  9. If removing the LH cylinder head, remove and support the A/C compressor mounting bracket (2882) and power steering pump (3A674).
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the nuts.
    3. Loosen the remaining (A) bolt until the (B) A/C compressor mounting bracket and power steering pump are free from the LH cylinder head. Support the A/C compressor mounting bracket and power steering pump and position aside.

  10. Disconnect the knock sensor and the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connectors.

  11. If removing the RH cylinder head, remove the generator (GEN) (10346). For additional information, refer to GENERATORS & REGULATORS - SINGLE GENERATOR .
  12. If removing the RH cylinder head, remove the idler pulley.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the idler pulley.

  13. If removing the RH cylinder head, remove the generator mounting bracket (10153).
  14. Remove the bolts.
  15. Remove the generator mounting bracket.

    CAUTION: If components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.
  16. Remove the rocker arms (6564).
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the rocker arms.

  17. Remove the push rods (6565).

  18. Remove and discard the bolts.

  19. Remove the cylinder head and the head gasket (6051). Discard the head gasket.
