Disassembly (Non-ABS)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 1999 Mercury Tracer, 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Ford Escort, 1999 Ford Contour, and 1998 Mercury Tracer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove master cylinder. Clean outside of master cylinder. Remove fluid reservoir cap. Drain brake fluid from master cylinder.
- Clamp master cylinder in vise at mounting flange. On Escort and Tracer, remove reservoir screw. On all models, remove plastic reservoir and seals. See Fig 1.
- Press primary piston inward, and remove piston stop bolt (if equipped). Remove snap ring. Remove primary and secondary piston assemblies. If secondary piston is difficult to remove, apply compressed air to secondary outlet port to aid in piston removal.
