Removal and Installation

All vehicles
- Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the off position.
- Disconnect the battery cables (14301) and wait at least one minute to allow for depletion of the restraint system backup power supply.
- Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
- Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Remove the transmission range indicator (PRND21) from the steering column (3C529).
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the indicator cable.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
All vehicles
- Disconnect the brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector.
- Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
- Discard the bolt.
- Remove the steering column lower nuts.
- Remove the nuts and the steering column.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Use a new pinch bolt.
- Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
