Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 30 other vehicles, including the 2004 Mercury Sable, 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, 2004 Mercury Monterey, 2004 Mercury Marauder, and 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. KJ1 DTC P0234: CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS 
    NOTE: The supercharger is bypassed when the engine is in WOT and the brakes are being applied. This is called a brake torque.
    • CHECK that the engine has not been subjected to a brake torque. This causes a P0234 DTC.
    • Drive the vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes with the engine exceeding 2,000 RPM. Make sure the engine temperature stabilizes.
    • Return to the repair area and check that the upper radiator hose is hot and pressurized.

    Are any other DTCs present? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF
    Disregard the current Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) at this time. Address the next DTC. Go to POWERTRAIN DTC CHARTS & DESCRIPTIONS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE for DTC charts.
    GO to  KJ2.
  2. KJ2 CHECK THE IAT2 PID 
    • Key ON Engine RUN.
    • Access the PCM -IAT2 PID.

    Is the temperature greater than 110 C (230 F)? 

    Yes No
    CHECK for low fluid level in the CAC system
    CHECK for cracked intercooler lines. REPAIR as necessary.
    GO to  KJ3.
  3. KJ3 CHECK THE TFT PID 
    • Key ON Engine RUN.
    • Access the PCM -TFT PID.

    Is the temperature greater than 135 C (275 F)? 

    Yes No
    CHECK for low transmission fluid level. REFER to the appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article. GO to  KJ4.
  4. KJ4 CHECK FOR THE LOW SPEED FUEL PUMP RELAY NOT SWITCHING 
    • Key ON Engine RUN.
    • Access the PCM -LFPF PID.

    Is the PID state indicating a fault? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF
    Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS .
    CHECK for indications of engine knock while driving the vehicle. REPAIR as necessary. If OK, indicate to the vehicle owner that transmission damage may occur during a brake torque
    The diagnostic was unable to determine the cause of the customer complaint.
  5. KJ5 DTC P0243: CHECK THE SUPERCHARGER (BOOST) BYPASS SOLENOID OUTPUT 
    • Key OFF.
    • SCBC Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Connect non-powered test lamp between:
      ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side ( - )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side
      VPWR - Pin 2 SCBC - Pin 1
    • Key ON Engine OFF.
    • Observe the test lamp.
    • Scan Tool Connected
    • Enter Output Test Mode. Refer to OUTPUT TEST MODE .
    • Command outputs ON
    • Observe the test lamp.
    • Scan Tool Connected
    • Enter Output Test Mode Refer to OUTPUT TEST MODE .
    • Command outputs OFF

    Does the test lamp turn on and off when the output(s) is commanded on and off? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF
    GO to  KJ6.
    GO to  KJ7.
  6. KJ6 CHECK THE SCBC SOLENOID RESISTANCE 
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Component Side ( - )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Component Side
    SCBC - Pin 1 VPWR - Pin 2

    Is the resistance between 68 ohms - 78 ohms? 

    Yes No
    CHECK for damaged vacuum hoses between the engine intake manifold and the SCBC solenoid. CHECK for vacuum reservoir assembly leaks. REPAIR or INSTALL new as necessary. If OK, DIAGNOSE as an intermittent concern. INSTALL a new SCBC solenoid.
  7. KJ7 CONFIRM THE TEST LAMP STATUS 

    Was the test lamp always off? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF
    GO to  KJ8.
    KEY OFF
    GO to  KJ11.
  8. KJ8 CHECK FOR AN OPEN VPWR CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE SCBC SOLENOID AND THE POWER RELAY 
    • Measure the voltage between:
    ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side ( - )Vehicle battery
    VPWR - Pin 2 Negative terminal

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF
    GO to  KJ10.
    KEY OFF
    GO to  KJ9.
  9. KJ9 CHECK THE VPWR CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS 
    NOTE: REFER to the POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) CONNECTOR  in the beginning of this pinpoint test.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side ( - )PCM Connector, Harness Side
    VPWR - Pin 2 VPWR

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KJ10. REPAIR open circuit.
  10. KJ10 CHECK THE SCBC CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side ( - )PCM Connector, Harness Side
    SCBC - Pin 1 SCBC

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REPAIR open circuit.
  11. KJ11 CHECK THE SCBC CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO PWRGND IN THE HARNESS 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Scan tool connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )SCBC Solenoid Connector, Harness Side ( - )PCM Connector, Harness Side
    SCBC - Pin 1 PWRGND

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KJ12. REPAIR short circuit.
  12. KJ12 CHECK THE SCBC CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER OR TO CHASSIS GROUND IN THE HARNESS 
    • Scan tool connector connected.
    • Key ON Engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
    ( + )PCM Connector, Component Side ( - )
    SCBC Ground

    Is the voltage less than 1 V? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF. INSTALL a new PCM. KEY OFF. REPAIR short circuit.
  13. KJ13 LACK OF POWER (LOW BOOST) - CHECK THE VACUUM HOSES 
    NOTE: For vehicle specific vacuum hose routing, refer to the vehicle information decal located in the front of the engine compartment.
    • CHECK for holes, cracks, bends or kinks in the vacuum line between the supercharger bypass actuator and the supercharger bypass solenoid.
    • CHECK for holes, cracks, bends or kinks in the vacuum line between the supercharger bypass solenoid and the vacuum reservoir assembly.
    • CHECK for any disconnected hoses at the supercharger bypass actuator, bypass solenoid or vacuum reservoir assembly.

    Are any vacuum line issues present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR or INSTALL new vacuum lines as required. Concern is elsewhere. RETURN to SYMPTOM CHARTS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE for further direction.
