Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 30 other vehicles, including the 2004 Mercury Sable, 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, 2004 Mercury Monterey, 2004 Mercury Marauder, and 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Proceed to DTC testing steps listed in FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION  table of fault code setting condition.
FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION

  1. DA1 DTC P0113: SIMULATE AN OPPOSITE SIGNAL TO THE PCM 
    • The DTC indicates the sensor signal is greater than the self -test maximum.
    • Possible causes:
      • Open in the harness.
      • Incorrect harness connections.
      • Faulty Sensor.
      • Faulty or damaged PCM.
    • IAT connector disconnected.
      NOTE: On some applications the IAT signal is integrated into the MAF sensor.
    • Key ON Engine OFF.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
    Point A IAT Connector, Harness Side Point B IAT Connector, Harness Side
    IAT SIGRTN
    • Access the PCM -IAT V PID.

    Is the IAT PID available? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DA2. REMOVE the jumper.
    GO to  C1.
  2. DA2 CHECK FOR AN OPPOSITE SIGNAL AT THE SENSOR 
    • Jumper installed.
    • Access the PCM -IAT V PID.

    Is the voltage less than 0.2 V? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new IAT. KEY OFF.
    REMOVE the jumper.
    GO to  DA3.
  3. DA3 CHECK THE SIGNAL AND SIGRTN CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )IAT Connector, Harness Side ( - )PCM Connector, Harness Side
    IAT IAT
    SIGRTN SIGRTN

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASEABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY - FLASH EEPROM . REPAIR open circuit.
  4. DA4 DTC P0112: SIMULATE AN OPPOSITE SIGNAL TO THE PCM 
    • The DTC indicates the sensor signal is less than the self-test minimum.
    • Possible causes:
      • Grounded circuit in the harness.
      • Incorrect harness connections.
      • Faulty Sensor.
      • Faulty or damaged PCM.
    • IAT connector disconnected.
      NOTE: On some applications the IAT signal is integrated into the MAF sensor.
    • Key ON Engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM -IAT V PID.

    Is the voltage greater than 4.2 V? 

    Yes No
    KEY OFF. INSTALL a new IAT. KEY OFF.
    For vehicles with an integrated MAF/IAT 
    GO to  DA5.
    For vehicles with stand alone IAT 
    GO to  DA6.
  5. DA5 CHECK THE IAT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO MAF RTN 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )MAF/IAT Sensor Connector, Harness Side ( - )MAF/IAT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
    IAT MAF RTN

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR short circuit. GO to  DA6.
  6. DA6 CHECK THE IAT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GND 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )PCM Connector, Harness Side ( - )PCM Connector, Harness Side
    IAT SIGRTN
    • Measure the resistance between:
    ( + )PCM Connector, Harness Side ( - )12V vehicle battery
    IAT Negative terminal

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASEABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY - FLASH EEPROM . REPAIR short circuit.
  7. DA7 SELF-TEST DTCS P0112, P0113, P0114 OR P1112: INTERMITTENT CHECK 
    • Key ON Engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM -IAT V PID.
    • While observing the PID, carry out the following:
      • Tap on the sensor to simulate road shock.
      • Wiggle the sensor connector.

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    DISCONNECT and INSPECT the connector.
    If OK,
    REPLACE the component.
    GO to  DA8.
  8. DA8 CHECK THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EC) WIRING HARNESS 
    • Access the PCM -IAT V PID.
    • While observing the PID, carry out the following:
      • Wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness while working from the sensor to the PCM.

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    ISOLATE the fault
    Repair as necessary.
    KEY OFF.
    GO to  DA9.
  9. DA9 CHECK THE PCM AND VEHICLE HARNESS CONNECTORS 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • IAT connector disconnected.
      NOTE: On some applications the IAT signal is integrated into the MAF sensor.

    Are the connectors and terminals OK? 

    Yes No
    The fault is not present at this time
    Disregard the current Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) at this time. Address the next DTC. Go to POWERTRAIN DTC CHARTS & DESCRIPTIONS - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE for DTC charts.
    Repair as necessary.
