Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 32 other vehicles, including the 2005 Mercury Sable, 2005 Mercury Mountaineer, 2005 Mercury Monterey, 2005 Mercury Montego, and 2005 Mercury Mariner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. TG1 DTCS P1729 AND P1781: VERIFY THE SELECTOR IS IN 4X2 OR 4X4H 
    NOTE: The transmission range (TR) sensor must indicate the NEUTRAL position before 4x4L shift.
    • Verify the vehicle is equipped with 4x4.
    • Verify the selector is in 4x2 or 4x4H.

    Is the selector in 2WD or 4x4H mode during the Quick Test? 

    Yes No
    GO to  TG2. VERIFY the transmission gear selector is in NEUTRAL. SELECT 2WD or 4x4H. REPEAT the Quick Test
  2. TG2 VERIFY THE 4X4L SWITCH CYCLES ON/OFF 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Cycle the 4wd selector switch allowing 10 to 15 seconds in each position.

    Does the 4X4 lamp indicate the range selected? 

    Yes No
    GO to  TG3. GO to  TG4.
  3. TG3 CHECK THE 4X4L CIRCUIT FOR AN INTERMITTENT FAULT 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the 4X4L PID.
    • Cycle the 4WD switch to 2WD.
    • Grasp the vehicle harness starting at the transfer case vehicle harness connector. Shake and bend a small section of the harness all the way to the PCM.
    • Tap the vehicle harness connector at the transfer case.
    • Shake and bend a small section of the harness between the instrument cluster connector and the PCM.

    Does the 4x4L PID reading go ON/OFF during harness and connector movement? 

    Yes No
    Key in OFF position.
    ISOLATE the fault and REPAIR as necessary.
    Key in OFF position.
    GO to  TG4.
  4. TG4 CHECK THE 4X4L SIGNAL VOLTAGE TO THE PCM 
    • Disconnect the PCM.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the 4x4L circuit at PCM harness connector and battery negative post while cycling the switch.

    Does the voltage cycle? 

    Yes No
    Key in OFF position.
    For P1729: Unable to verify the concern. GO to  Z1.
    For P1781: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM)
    Key in OFF position.
    GO to  TG5.
  5. TG5 CHECK THE 4X4L CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS 
    NOTE: Only one of the following resistance checks is used, depending on the system that is being diagnosed.
    • Disconnect the 4x4L switch on mechanical shift on the fly system.
    • Disconnect the 4WD control module on the electronic shift on the fly system.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) 4X4LSW Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      4x4L - Pin 2 4x4L
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) 4WD Module Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      4x4L - Pin 9 4x4L

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  TG6. REPAIR the open circuit.
  6. TG6 CHECK THE 4X4L FOR A SHORT TO POWER IN THE HARNESS 
    • 4X4LSW connector disconnected.
    • 4WD Module connector disconnected.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) Vehicle Battery
      4x4L Negative terminal

    Is the voltage less than 1 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  TG7. REPAIR the short circuit.
  7. TG7 CHECK THE 4X4L CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND IN THE HARNESS 
    • Connect the 4WD switch on the mechanical shift on the fly system.
    • Connect the 4WD control module on the electronic shift on the fly system.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      4x4L PWRGND

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes No
    REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM to diagnose the four wheel drive systems REPAIR the short circuit.
