Possible Causes

Incorrect vehicle identification fault could be caused by damaged wiring, terminals or connectors, incorrect RCM for vehicle, incorrect impact sensor information or incorrect OCS system for vehicle.

1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve, flag and record any continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and LFC 1-5 is displayed on AIR BAG warning light, go to next step. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and LFC 11-1, 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 or 11-5 is displayed on AIR BAG warning light, go to step  3 . If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and AIR BAG warning light is flashing at 5 Hz (five time per second), replace RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If flagged fault "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist and entire test must be carried out. If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  6 .
   NOTE: For this application, RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 must have no connection.
2. Check OCS part number
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check part number on OCS system and compare with number in master parts catalog. If part number on OCS system matches part number in master parts catalog, go to next step. If part number on OCS system does not match part number in master parts catalog, replace OCS system with correct part. See OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR (OCS)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  7 .
3. Check crash sensor part numbers
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check part numbers on all crash sensors and compare with numbers in master parts catalog. If part numbers on crash sensors match part numbers in master parts catalog, go to next step. If part numbers on any crash sensor does not match part numbers in master parts catalog, replace appropriate crash sensor(s) with correct part(s). Go to step  7 .
4. Check RCM part number
   
   Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check part number on RCM against part number listed in master parts catalog. If part number on RCM matches part number listed in master parts catalog, go to next step. If part number on RCM does not match part number listed in master parts catalog, replace RCM with correct part. Go to step  7 .
   NOTE: Ensure all air bag system simulators, sensor electrical connectors and RCM electrical connectors are connected prior to carrying out on-demand self-test, or erroneous faults may be set.
5. Confirm RCM fault
   
   Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Connect negative battery cable. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, replace RCM. Go to step  7 . If DTC C1414 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Activate other systems in same wire harness. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to step  7 .
6. Check for intermittent fault
   
   Turn ignition switch to off position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and LFC 1-5 is displayed on AIR BAG warning light, go to step  2 . If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and LFC 11-1, 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 or 11-5 is displayed on AIR BAG warning light, go to step  3 . If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and AIR BAG warning light is flashing at 5 Hz (five time per second), replace RCM. If flagged fault "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist and entire test must be carried out. If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Activate other systems in same wire harness. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to step  7 .
7. Check for additional DTCs
   
   Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
