Possible Causes

An out-of-range resistance in right seat belt pretensioner circuit could be caused by damaged wiring, connectors or terminals, faulty right seat belt pretensioner or RCM internal fault.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTCs

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  . Clear continuous DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC B1881 or 1886 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC B1881 or 1886 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  5 .
  2. Check right seat belt pretensioner circuit

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Using scan tool, enter PID/DATA MONITOR and RECORD function. Select PID P-PRTNR. If resistance is 1.7-3.2 ohms, replace RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  6 . If resistance is less than 1.7 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3.2 ohms, go to step  4 .
  3. Check right seat belt pretensioner circuits for high resistance

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C2041. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right seat belt pretensioner harness connector C303. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C2041, terminal No. 15 and right seat belt pretensioner harness connector C303, terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red wire, circuit No. 1081). See Figure & Figure . Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C2041, terminal No. 16 and right seat belt pretensioner harness connector C303, terminal No. 1 (Light Blue/Black wire, circuit No. 1082). If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace right seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  6 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair high resistance in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  6 .
  4. Check right seat belt pretensioner circuits for low resistance

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access RCM and disconnect harness connector C2041. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right seat belt pretensioner harness connector C303. Measure resistance between RCM harness connector C2041, terminal No. 15 (Yellow/Red wire, circuit No. 1079) and No. 16 (Light Blue/Black wire, circuit No. 1080). See Figure & Figure . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace right seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  6 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  6 .
  5. Check for intermittent fault

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC 1881 or B1886 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, check for intermittent fault in Yellow/Red or Light Blue/Black wire. Repair any intermittent problems found. If intermittent problems are found and repaired, go to next step. If intermittent problems are not found and DTC 1881 was retrieved, go to step  3 . If intermittent problems are not found and DTC B1886 was retrieved, go to step  4 . If DTC 1881 or B1886 was not retrieved, check for cause of intermittent fault. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Activate systems in same wire harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step.
  6. Check for additional DTCs

    Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
