Diagnostics Disabling Procedure (Seats Removed-with Side Curtain AIR Bags)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
This procedure should only be used when diagnosing/repairing seat side air bag problems, or when diagnosing/repairing any in-seat or seat mounted component of a seat equipped with a seat side air bag, on vehicles equipped with side curtain air bags.
- Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
- Remove driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE . Connect Air Bag Simulators (418-F395) on harness side of clockspring electrical connectors, located at top of steering column (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
- Remove instrument panel trim panel mounting nut, if equipped, and trim panel. See Figure
. Remove glove box arm assist cable. Lift up on assist arms and lower glove box door. Remove assist cable bracket retaining screws. Remove 5 glove box bin retaining screws, disconnect glove box light connector and remove glove box bin. Remove glove box door retaining screws and glove box door. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module harness connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on passenger-side air bag harness connector (in place of air bag).NOTE: If headliner has the word "AIRBAG" embossed on it, near B-pillar, the vehicle is equipped with side curtain air bags.
- Remove left A-pillar trim panel. Disconnect left-side curtain air bag harness connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (501-097) on harness side of left-side curtain air bag connector. Repeat procedure to disable right-side curtain air bag module.
- Remove right and left front seats. See FRONT SEAT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (501-097) on harness side of side thorax air bag harness connectors (in place of air bags).
- On all models, remove right B-pillar weatherstrip. Position right front seat belt shoulder height adjuster to highest position. Detach right B-pillar upper trim panel. Remove right front and rear door scuff plates. Remove right B-pillar lower trim panel. Disconnect right front seat belt retractor/pretensioner electrical connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (105-R0012/418-F088) on harness side of right front seat belt retractor/pretensioner electrical connector. Repeat procedure to disable left front seat belt pretensioner. Connect negative battery cable.
CAUTION:
Removing side curtain air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side curtain air bags. Side curtain air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side curtain air bags on these models. Do not remove side curtain air bag bridge resistors unless directed.
