Possible Causes

A side air bag status fault could be caused by faulty wiring, terminals or connectors, faulty side air bag module or faulty RCM.
- Check for hard or intermittent DTC
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL under DIAGNOSTICS. Retrieve and record any continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under DIAGNOSTICS. Flag DTC B2295. See BIT-MAPPED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Retrieve and record any flagged faults. On models not equipped without side air bag modules if DTC B2295 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. On models equipped with side air bag modules, go to step 2 . If DTC B2295 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is intermittent. Go to step 26 . - Check right- & left-side air bag modules
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC B2295 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, use flagged faults recorded in step 1 to find appropriate step. If flagged fault of "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist. Entire test must be carried out before replacing RCM.- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to next step.
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step 4 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 5 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 7 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to battery (STB), go to step 9 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to ground (STG), go to step 10 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 11 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 13 .
If DTC B2295 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test and if flagged fault of "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist. Entire test must be carried out before replacing air bag module. If DTC B2295 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, use flagged faults recorded in step 1 to find appropriate step.
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step 15 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step 16 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 17 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 19 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to battery (STB), go to step 20 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to ground (STG), go to step 21 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 22 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 24 .
NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check circuits for short to battery between RCM & left-side air bag module
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire, circuit No. 30S-JA37). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Brown/Green wire, circuit No. 31S-JA37). If voltage is more than 0.2 volt in either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If voltage is less than 0.2 volt in both circuits, go to step 25 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check circuits for short to ground between RCM & left-side air bag module
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire, circuit No. 30S-JA37). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Brown/Green wire, circuit No. 31S-JA37). If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, go to step 25 . - Check circuit between RCM & left-side air bag module for open
Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance in Red/Green wire (circuit No. 30S-JA37) between and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 1 and harness side of left-side air bag connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Red/Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . - Check circuit between RCM & left-side air bag module for open
Measure resistance in Brown/Green wire (circuit No. 31S-JA37) between and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 and harness side of left-side air bag connector. If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step 25 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Brown/Green wire. Go to step 27 . - Check circuits for low resistance between RCM & left-side air bag module
Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Measure resistance between Red/Green wire (circuit No. 30S-JA37) and Brown/Green wire (circuit No. 31S-JA37) on harness side of left-side air bag connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 25 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. - Check RCM circuits for low resistance
Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector No C310A, pins No. 1 and 2. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step 25 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance between Red/Green and Brown/Green wires. Go to step 27 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check circuits for short to battery between RCM & right-side air bag module
Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 (Red/Black wire, circuit No. 30S-JA38). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminals No. 22 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 31S-JA38). If voltage is more than 0.2 volt on either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If voltage is less than 0.2 volt on both circuits, go to step 25 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check circuits for short to ground between RCM & right-side air bag module
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 (Red/Black wire, circuit No. 30S-JA38). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 22 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 31S-JA38). If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, go to step 25 . - Check circuit for open between RCM & right-side air bag module
Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance in Red/Black wire (circuit No. 30S-JA38) between and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 and harness side of right-side air bag connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Red/Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . - Check circuit for open between RCM & right-side air bag module
Measure resistance in Black/Red wire (circuit No. 31S-JA38) between harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 22 and harness side of right-side air bag connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to step 25 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, repair open in Black/Red wire. Go to step 27 . - Check circuits for low resistance between RCM & right-side air bag module
Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Measure resistance between Red/Black wire (circuit No. 30S-JA38) and Black/Red wire (circuit No. 31S-JA38) on harness side of right-side air bag connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 25 . - Check RCM circuits for low resistance
Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of RCM connector C310A, pins No. 21 and 22. See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, go to step 25 . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair low resistance between Red/Black and Black/Red wires. Go to step 27 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check left-side air bag wiring harness for short to battery
Access and disconnect left-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Position left front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect left front under-seat harness connectors to left front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire, circuit No. 30S-JA37). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 2 (Brown/Green wire, circuit No. 31S-JA37). If voltage is more than 0.2 volt in either circuit, repair short to battery in appropriate wire and replace left front seat air bag module wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If voltage is less than 0.2 volt in both circuits, replace left-side air bag module. Go to step 27 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check left-side air bag wiring harness for short to ground
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Access and disconnect left-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Position left front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect left front under-seat harness connectors to left front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire, circuit No. 30S-JA37). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminals No. 2 (Brown/Green wire, circuit No. 31S-JA37). If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire and replace left front seat air bag module wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step 27 . If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, replace left-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . - Check left-side air bag wiring harness for open
Access and disconnect left-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Measure resistance in Red/Green wire (circuit No. 30S-JA37) between seat harness side of left-side air bag under-seat harness connector and harness side of left-side air bag module connector. If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, replace left front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . - Check left-side air bag wiring harness for open
Measure resistance in Brown/Green wire (circuit No. 31S-JA37) between seat harness side of left-side air bag under-seat harness connector and harness side of left-side air bag module connector. If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace left-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, replace left front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . - Check left-side air bag wiring harness for low resistance
Access and disconnect left-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect left-side air bag simulator. Position left front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect left front under-seat harness connectors to left front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between Red/Green wire (circuit No. 30S-JA37) and Brown/Green wire (circuit No. 31S-JA37) on harness side of left-side air bag connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace left-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace left front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check right-side air bag wiring harness for short to battery
Access and disconnect right-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Position right front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect right front under-seat harness connectors to right front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 (Red/Black wire, circuit No. 30S-JA38). See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 22 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 31S-JA38). If voltage is more than 0.2 volt in either circuit, repair short to battery and replace left front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is less than 0.2 volt in both circuits, replace right-side air bag module. Go to step 27 .NOTE: Due to shorting bar in connector, fault can exist in either circuit. Do not remove or defeat shorting bars. - Check right-side air bag wiring harness for short to ground
Access and disconnect right-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Position right front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect right front under-seat harness connectors to right front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 21 (Red/Black wire, circuit No. 30S-JA38). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310A, terminal No. 22 (Black/Red wire, circuit No. 31S-JA38). If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair short to ground and replace right front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, replace right-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . - Check right-side air bag wiring harness for open
Access and disconnect right-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance in Red/Black wire (circuit No. 30S-JA38) between seat harness side of right-side air bag under-seat harness connector and harness side of right-side air bag module connector. If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, replace right front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . - Check right-side air bag wiring harness for open
Measure resistance in Black/Red wire (circuit No. 31S-JA38) between seat harness side of right-side air bag under-seat harness connector and harness side of right-side air bag module connector. If resistance is less than 0.5 ohm, replace right-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . If resistance is more than 0.5 ohm, replace right front seat air bag module harness. Go to step 27 . - Check right-side air bag wiring harness for low resistance
Access and disconnect right-side air bag connector at air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right-side air bag simulator. Position right front seat in vehicle (DO NOT activate air bag system at this time). Reconnect right front under-seat harness connectors to right front seat. Access and disconnect RCM connector C310A. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between Red/Black wire (circuit No. 30S-JA38) and Black/Red wire (circuit No. 31S-JA38) on harness side of right-side air bag connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace right-side air bag module. Go to step 27 . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace right front seat air bag module harness.NOTE: Ensure all air bag system simulators, sensor electrical connectors and RCM electrical connectors are connected prior to carrying out on-demand self-test or erroneous faults may be set. - Confirm RCM fault
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect all air bag module simulators. Reconnect RCM connectors. Turn ignition to RUN position. Perform on-demand self-test. Retrieve and record any flagged faults. Flag DTC B2295. If DTC B2295 was retrieved during on-demand self-test and "?" was flagged by scan tool, carry out entire test before replacing RCM. Replace RCM. Go to step 27 . If DTC B2295 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is corrected. Go to step 27 . - Check for intermittent fault
Turn ignition to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform on-demand self-test. Flag DTC B2295. If DTC B2295 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, check for causes of intermittent fault at or near affected side air bag module harness connector. Repair any intermittent faults found and go to next step. If intermittent fault was not found, refer to recorded flagged faults for appropriate test. If flagged fault "?" was retrieved during on-demand self-test, multiple faults exist and all steps of diagnostic procedure must be performed before replacing RCM.- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to battery (STB) fault, go to step 3 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with short to ground (STG) fault, go to step 4 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 5 .
- For left-side air bag module (DFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 7 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to battery (STB), go to step 9 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with a short to ground (STG), go to step 10 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with an open circuit (O-CIR), go to step 11 .
- For right-side air bag module (PFSIDE) with low resistance (LOWRES), go to step 13 .
If DTC B2295 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, check for cause of intermittent fault. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step.
- Check for additional DTCs
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS.
