Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

- Clockspring is located on steering column between steering wheel and multifunction switch. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Leave negative battery cable disconnected. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
- If clockspring is to be reused, apply tape or service lock (if available), across clockspring face to prevent accidental rotation. See Fig 1. Unscrew tilt wheel handle shank and remove. Remove upper instrument panel steering column cover.
- Remove junction box fuse/relay panel cover. Remove 2 parking brake release lever bolts and position lever aside. Remove 2 hood release lever bolts and position lever aside. Remove 6 lower instrument panel steering column cover bolts and remove cover. Remove 3 lower steering column shroud screws and remove shroud.
- Turn ignition lock cylinder to RUN position. Using suitable tool, push upward on cylinder release tab through hole in lock cylinder housing while pulling cylinder outward. Remove steering column upper shroud. Remove passive anti-theft transmitter screw and remove transmitter.
- Remove key-in warning switch from ignition lock cylinder housing. See Fig 1. Disengage clockspring harness connectors from bracket. Disconnect connectors and remove harness from retaining clips. Pry 2 clockspring retaining clips loose and remove clockspring.
