Valve Springs: Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
- Remove the camshaft roller followers. For additional information, refer to Camshaft Roller Follower .
- Remove the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to ENGINE IGNITION - 4.6L (2V) article.
- Position the piston at the top of the stroke.
- Install compressed air in the cylinder to hold both valves in position.
- Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs.
- Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainers and the valve spring.
NOTE:
If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder. If air pressure must be removed, support the valve prior to removal.
