Removal (Windsor Engine)

CAUTION: Engine is not free-wheeling Engine. If the crankshaft or the camshafts are moved in any manner during removal and installation, the crankshaft and camshafts must be re-synchronized.
NOTE: Special tools required: Camshaft Holding Tool (303-557), Camshaft Positioning Tool (303-S568) and Crankshaft Holding Tool (303-448). See Fig 1Fig 2 and Fig 3 .
  1. Remove front cover. See FRONT COVER . Remove crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel from crankshaft. See Fig 4.
    CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.
  2. Using Crankshaft Positioner (303-448), position the crankshaft so the keyway is pointing straight up, at the 12 o'clock position. See Fig 5.
    NOTE: Crankshaft positioner may also referred to as crankshaft holding tool.
  3. Install Camshaft Holding Tool (303-557), one on each cylinder head. See Fig 6.
  4. Remove right and left timing chain tensioners. Remove timing chain tensioner arms. See Fig 7.
    CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinders heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Do not remove the Camshaft Holding Tool.
  5. Remove right and left timing chains and crankshaft sprockets. See Fig 8.
  6. Remove timing chain guides. See Fig 9.
