Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.

For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.
    NOTE: This step is necessary only if a new ABS module is being installed.
  1. Connect the scan tool and upload the module configuration information from the ABS module. For additional information, refer to MODULE CONFIGURATION .
  2. Remove the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) heat shield.
    • Remove the 2 heat shield bolts.
      • To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
    • Release the 2 high-voltage cable retaining pins from the heat shield.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.

  4. Disconnect the master cylinder brake tube fittings from the HCU  .
    • To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  5. NOTE: Note the order of the brake tubes.
  6. Disconnect the brake tube-to- HCU  fittings (12 mm).
    • To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
  7. Remove the 3 HCU  bracket-to-frame bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  8. Disconnect the brake tube from the routing clip located at the bottom of the HCU  bracket.
  9. Remove the HCU  assembly.
    • If a new HCU  is being installed, remove the HCU  bracket-to- HCU  bolts.
      • To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  10. NOTE: Use care not to cross the tubes during installation. If the brake tubes are crossed, the ABS module will set DTCs during an ABS event.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  12. If a new ABS module was installed, download the module configuration information from the scan tool. For additional information, refer to MODULE CONFIGURATION .
  13. If a new ABS module and/or a new HCU  was installed, carry out the Multi-Calibration routine, following the scan tool directions.
  14. Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to BRAKE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
