Test J: Generator Noisy

  1. Check Drive Belt & Mounting Brackets

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check accessory drive belt for damage and correct installation. Check mounting brackets and pulleys for looseness and damage. Are the accessory drive and generator mounting brackets okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary.

  2. Check Generator Pulley(s)

    Check for bent or misaligned pulleys. Are the generator pulley(s) okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary.

  3. Check Lower Generator For Electrical Noise

    Disconnect lower generator 3-pin connector. Start engine and let idle. With the engine running, use a stethoscope or equivalent listening device to probe the lower generator for noise. Is the lower generator noisy? If yes, replace lower generator. See GENERATOR (LOWER)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, go to next step.

  4. Check Upper Generator For Electrical Noise

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect upper generator 3-pin connector. Start engine and let idle. With the engine running, use a stethoscope or equivalent listening device to probe the upper generator for noise. Is the upper generator noisy? If yes, install a new upper generator. See GENERATOR (UPPER)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, diagnose the source of the engine noise.
