Test F: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Is Intermittent

  1. Check For Fault Codes In PCM

    Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test. Do generator fault codes exist? If yes, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no, go to next step.
  2. Check Battery Voltage

    Start engine at let idle. Turn all accessories off. Measure voltage between primary battery terminals while varying engine speed. Is the voltage greater than 15.5 volts? If yes, perform TEST G: SYSTEM OVERCHARGES (BATTERY VOLTAGE GREATER THAN 15 VOLTS) . If no, go to next step.
  3. Check Charging System Indicator Operation

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using the NGS tester, enter the ACTIVE COMMANDS diagnostic mode. Active Command the charging system warning indicator to the ON position. Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, see appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Check PCM Operation

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor charging system warning indicator. Is the light illuminated? If yes, PCM is operating correctly. Recheck generator circuits for intermittent shorts or opens. Test system for normal operation. If no, go to next step.
  5. Check For Correct PCM Operation

    Disconnect PCM connectors. Inspect PCM connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect PCM connectors, ensuring it is connected properly. Connect all disconnected connectors. Operate system. Is the concern still present? If yes, replace PCM. If no, system is operating properly at this time.
