Test D: Warning Indicator Operates Properly, System Is Not Charging

  1. Check For Fault Codes In PCM

    Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test. Do generator fault codes exist? If yes, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no, go to next step.
  2. Check Upper & Lower Generator Connections

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGS tester. Check all battery and generator connections for corrosion, damage or looseness. Are all connections clean and tight? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary.
  3. Check Output (B+) Circuit (Yellow/White Or Red Wire) Of Upper Generator

    Measure voltage between ground and upper generator terminal B+ (Yellow/White or Red wire). Is the voltage equal to battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair circuit or fusible links between batteries and upper generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Check Output (B+) Circuit (Yellow/White Wire) Of Lower Generator

    Measure voltage between ground and lower generator terminal B+ (Yellow/White wire). Is the voltage equal to battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair circuit or fusible links between batteries and lower generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Check Battery Condition

    Test condition of batteries. See BATTERY TEST WITH DIGITAL BATTERY ANALYZER  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. Are the batteries okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace appropriate battery.
  6. Check Upper Generator Output

    Disconnect lower generator 3-pin connector. Perform load and no-load tests on upper generator. See GENERATOR LOAD TEST  and GENERATOR NO-LOAD TEST  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. Is the upper generator okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace upper generator.
  7. Check Lower Generator Output

    Connect lower generator 3-pin connector. Disconnect upper generator 3-pin connector. Perform load and no-load tests on lower generator. See GENERATOR LOAD TEST  and GENERATOR NO-LOAD TEST  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. Is the lower generator okay? If yes, system is operating properly at this time. If no, replace lower generator.
