Section 244 (Generators & Regulators - F250-F550 Super Duty (Diesel With Dual Generators)): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford Pickup, 2004 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2004 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2004 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: References to F250-F550 Pickups include Cab & Chassis.
NOTE: Generator and regulator cannot be serviced separately, and must be replaced as an assembly.
NOTE: Only diesel models with dual generators have self-diagnostics. All other systems are not connected through the powertrain control module.

Optional dual system on diesel models consists of a pair of generators with internal voltage regulators, 2 batteries, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), warning indicator, ignition switch and wiring. Generators operate independently through internal voltage regulation. PCM monitors both generators, and is able to set diagnostic trouble codes and control charge warning indicator operation. PCM generator control is limited to disabling lower generator during glow plug operation to avoid over-voltage damage to glow plug circuit. Generators have different size pulleys, and are not interchangeable.

Charge warning indicator should illuminate with ignition on, engine off. Charge warning indicator should not illuminate with ignition off, or with engine running.
