Test F: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently

- Check For Loose Connections
Inspect all generator, power distribution and battery connections for looseness, corrosion, and loose or bent terminals. Are all connections clean and tight? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary. Test the system for normal operation. - Check Fuse Connections
Start engine and let idle. Inspect central junction box fuse No. 45 (10-amp) for looseness. Wiggle fuse connection and note warning indicator. Does the charging system warning indicator flicker? If yes, repair loose fuse connection as necessary. Test the system for normal operation. If no, go to next step. - Check "A" Circuit (Orange/Light Blue Wire) Connections
Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire (15-amp) connected to positive battery terminal, backprobe generator harness connector terminal No. 3 (Orange/Light Blue wire). See Figure. Start engine and let idle. Observe warning indicator. Does the charging system warning indicator flicker? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair loose connections in circuit between generator and Gray fusible link. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Test the system for normal operation. - Inspect "S" Terminal
Turn ignition off. Check the generator "S" terminal to make sure it is correctly mated to the generator and making good contact with the "S" terminal on the generator. See Figure. Is the "S" terminal in satisfactory condition? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as necessary. Test the system for normal operation. - Check Generator Brushes
Remove the generator from the vehicle. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure the resistance between the "A" and "F" terminals on the voltage regulator. See Fig 1. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, install a new generator. Test the system for normal operation. If no, go to next step. - Check For A Grounded Slip Ring
Remove the voltage regulator. See REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure the resistance between the generator slip rings. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? If yes, install a new generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test the system for normal operation. If no, install a new regulator. Test the system for normal operation.
