Pinpoint Test F: TSS Sensor

NOTE: Refer to the TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR  connector illustration within the TRANSAXLE CONNECTOR LAYOUTS  procedure.
NOTE: Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) codes may be a result of bad power and ground circuits shared between the Transmission Range (TR) sensor, Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and TSS  sensor.
  1. F1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS 
    • Check to make sure the transaxle vehicle harness C168a is fully seated, terminals are engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
    • Have the items above been checked? 
    1. Yes:  GO to F2  .
    2. No:  CARRY OUT the checks. ERASE the codes. RERUN the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) tests.
  2. F2 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Monitor the TSS  sensor PIDs while test driving the vehicle.
    • Are the TSS sensor signal present and consistent? 
    1. Yes:  The condition that set the DTC is intermittent and is not currently present. ERASE the codes. RERUN the OBD  tests.
    2. No:  GO to F3  .
  3. F3 CHECK THE TRANSAXLE VEHICLE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT 
    • Disconnect: TSS  Sensor C168b.
    • Disconnect: PCM Transaxle Harness C175T.
    • Use a mirror to inspect both ends of the connectors for damage or pushed-out pins, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
    • Measure the resistance between the TSS  C168b and the PCM transaxle C175T.

      TSS  power supply LE111 (VT/GN) C168b-3 C175T-1
      TSS  ground RET24 (BN/BU) C168b-1 C175T-36
      TSS  sensor signal VET33 (WH/OG) C168b-2 C175T-16
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to F4  .
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit(s) for an open. CONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. F4 CHECK THE TRANSAXLE VEHICLE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Transaxle Vehicle Harness Connector C168a.
    • Measure the resistance between TSS  C168b and ground.

      TSS  ground RET24 (BN/BU) C168b-1 Ground
      TSS  sensor signal VET33 (WH/OG) C168b-2 Ground
      TSS  power supply LE111 (VT/GN) C168b-3 Ground
    • Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 
    1. Yes:  GO to F5  .
    2. No:  REPAIR the circuit(s) for a short to ground. CONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. F5 CHECK THE TRANSAXLE VEHICLE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO POWER 
    • Check for voltage between the TSS  sensor C168b and ground.

      TSS  ground RET24 (BN/BU) C168b-1 Ground
      TSS  sensor signal VET33 (WH/OG) C168b-2 Ground
      TSS  power supply LE111 (VT/GN) C168b-3 Ground
    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes:  REPAIR the circuit(s) for a short to voltage. CONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No:  GO to F6  .
  6. F6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AND GROUND AT THE TSS SENSOR CONNECTOR 
    • Connect: PCM C175T.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure the voltage between TSS  sensor C168b-1 and C168b-3.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. Yes:  INSTALL a new speed sensor. REFER to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) . TEST the system for normal operation. If the condition is still present, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.5L or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) .
    2. No:  INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.5L or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) . CONNECT all components. TEST the system for normal operation.
