NOTE: Large metallic objects on the same key ring with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition key may cause vehicle starting problems and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine key ring for such objects. If objects are found that could interfere with PATS operation, turn ignition switch to LOCK position and restart engine with all metallic objects held away from ignition key. Encoded key must be an approved key by Ford, Rotunda, Ilco, Curtis or Strattec are approved by Ford for use with PATS.
  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, retrieve instrument cluster Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTC B1600 is only code retrieved, go to next step. If any other DTCs were retrieved, diagnose and repair those DTCs before proceeding. See HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay.
  2. Cut NEW encoded ignition key. Program key. See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester clear DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC B1600 is still retrieved, go to next step. If other DTCs are retrieved, diagnose and repair those DTCs before proceeding. See HYBRID ELECTRONIC CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install new PATS transceiver module. See PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM TRANSCEIVER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position using customer's original key, not the key programmed in step 2)  . Using NGS tester perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If DTC B1600 is not retrieved, system is okay. If DTC B1600 is retrieved, Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cycle ignition switch using 2 encoded keys. Repeat self-test and clear DTCs.
