PINPOINT TEST L: DTCs C1279, C1280, C1281, C1282, C1516, C1517, C1963, C2769, C2770 AND U0028 - SENSOR CLUSTER FAULT AND VEHICLE COMMUNICATION BUS OFF

NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground, at a complete standstill and not  on a hoist while carrying out the calibration procedure or the pinpoint test steps. Any vehicle movement will result in false values for this test.
  1. L1 CHECK THE SENSOR CLUSTER MOUNTING AND MOUNTING SURFACE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Inspect the sensor cluster mounting and make sure that the retaining bolts are fully seated and tightened correctly. Inspect the mounting surface for damage, corrosion or dirt.
    • Was the sensor cluster retaining bolts tightened incorrectly or a significant amount of corrosion or dirt found or the mounting surface damaged? 
    1. YES  : CLEAN and TIGHTEN the bolts to correct specification. REPAIR the mounting surface as necessary.

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

    2. NO  : Go to  L2.
  2. L2 CALIBRATE THE ABS MODULE 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Clear the ABS Module DTCs
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: IVD (ESC) Initialization Sequence
    • Carry out the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence using the scan tool.
    • Retrieve the ABS module DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved or does the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence indicate a fault? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L3.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly. The condition may have been caused by an incomplete or inaccurate calibration.
  3. L3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE SENSOR CLUSTER 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Stability Control Sensor Cluster C3073
    • Key in ON position.

      NOTE: Operate the components/systems that share ignition voltage with the sensor cluster. Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - E350 SUPER DUTY , Power Distribution for schematic and connector information.
    • Measure the voltage between sensor cluster C3073-2, circuit 640 (RD/YE), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L4.
    2. NO  : VERIFY CJB fuse 2 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 640 (RD/YE).

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. L4 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.

      NOTE: Operate the components/systems that share chassis ground with the sensor cluster. Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS - E350 SUPER DUTY , Grounds for schematic and connector information.
    • Measure the resistance between sensor cluster C3073-5, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK).

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. L5 CHECK THE CAN2 CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C155

    • Measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C155-20, circuit 1814 (WH/LB), harness side and stability control sensor cluster C3073-3, circuit 1814 (WH/LB), harness side.
      • ABS module C155-34, circuit 1815 (PK/LB), harness side and stability control sensor cluster C3073-4, circuit 1815 (PK/LB), harness side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s).

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

  6. L6 CHECK THE CAN2 CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.

    • Measure the resistance between ground and:
      • stability control sensor cluster C3073-3, circuit 1814 (WH/LB), harness side.
      • stability control sensor cluster C3073-4, circuit 1815 (PK/LB), harness side.
    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s).

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

  7. L7 CHECK THE CAN2 CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    • Measure the resistance between stability control sensor cluster C3073-3, circuit 1814 (WH/LB), harness side and stability control sensor cluster C3073-4, circuit 18145 (PK/LB), harness side
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  L8.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s).

      If DTC C1963 is present. CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms. CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

  8. L8 CHECK THE CAN2 CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • stability control sensor cluster C3073-3, circuit 1814 (WH/LB), harness side.
      • stability control sensor cluster C3073-4, circuit 1815 (PK/LB), harness side.
    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s).

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.

    2. NO  : INSTALL a new stability control sensor cluster. REFER to Stability Control Sensor Cluster  in this article.

      If DTC C1963 is present, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. DRIVE the vehicle above 48 km/h (30 mph) with input from the steering wheel rotation sensor.

      For all other DTCs and symptoms, CLEAR the DTCs. Using the scan tool, CARRY OUT the IVD (ESC) initialization sequence. REPEAT the self-test.
