Valve Cover - LH: Removal

All engines 

  1. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING article.
  2. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION article.
  3. NOTE: 5.4L (2V) shown, 4.6L (2V) similar.
  4. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube quick connect coupling from the valve cover. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION - GASOLINE AND DIESEL article.

    4.6L (2V) engine 

  6. Remove the oil level indicator and tube support bracket net.

    5.4L (2V) engine 

  8. Remove the oil level indicator and tube support bracket nut.

  10. Remove the bolt and position the oil level indicator and tube aside.

    4.6L (2V) engine 

  12. Disconnect the upper and lower fittings and remove the EGR system module tube.

    All engines 

    NOTE: 4.6L (2V) shown, 5.4L (2V) similar.
  14. Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors, ignition coil electrical connectors and the wire harness retainers.

  16. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer and position the engine control wiring harness aside.

  18. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the PCM bracket and disconnect the 2 PCM electrical connectors.

    CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.
    NOTE: The intake manifold is removed for clarity.
  20. Remove the LH valve cover.
    • Fully loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.
    • Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
