Pinpoint Test Am: The Key-In-Ignition Warning Chime Is Inoperative

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. AM1 CARRY OUT THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster (IC) DataLogger
    • Select the instrument cluster (IC) key-in-ignition warning chime (CHIME_KEY) active command. Command the key-in-ignition warning chime on.
    • Does the key-in-ignition warning chime sound? 
    1. YES  : Go to  AM2.
    2. NO  : Go to  AM7.
  2. AM2 CHECK FOR DTCs FROM THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS 
    • Review the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster (IC) self-test.
    • Is DTC B1352 present? 
    1. YES  : Go to  AM4.
    2. NO  : Go to  AM3.
  3. AM3 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMPS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Open then close the driver door.
    • Do the courtesy lamps operate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  AM7.
    2. NO  : REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING article.
  4. AM4 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING SWITCH OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220b
    • Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder.

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220b-18, circuit 158 (BK/PK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  AM7.
    2. NO  : Go to  AM5.
  5. AM5 CHECK CIRCUIT 158 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218b

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220b-18, circuit 158 (BK/PK), harness side and the clockspring C218b-1, circuit 158 (BK/PK), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  AM6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. AM6 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS article.

    • Measure the resistance between the lower clockspring pin 1, component side and the key-in-ignition warning switch, component side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new ignition lock cylinder. REFER to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. AM7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
